Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika were first collected by German hobbyists during the 1930's. However, it was during the 1970s and 80s that the cichlids from lakes Tanganyika and Malawi began to become popular aquarium fishes. This trend continues to the present unabated.

Their colorful appearance, the many different species available, their behavior and their breeding are just some of the reasons the Cichlids are one of the most popular aquarium fish.

Due to their aggressive behavior, the tank for African cichlids should be as large as possible, with its length being more critical than its height; meaning the longer the better.

In the Cichlid tank there must be places of refuge. These can be rock caves, large pieces of driftwood or even inverted flowerpots. Most large species of Cichlids will dig up the substrate material, and occasionally will remove plants from the substrate. The Angelfish, Discus and the dwarf species Apistogramma all prefer a densely planted tank.

The water temperature should be in the range of 24-28 degrees celsius, slightly higher for the Discus. The diet should consist of live and frozen food of all kinds as well a large flake staple food. Large specimens can be feed Earthworms, garden Crickets and kitchen leftovers.

  1. Frisky Fish Review by Grant

I ordered 5 on sale and all arrived healthy. Big difference in size between the 5 fish, but happy overall. Within 3 weeks they are developing their colours nicely, and one pair has already laid eggs, but ate them within 30 minutes. They have killed 4 of the swordtails that I bought in the same order, but they are known to be a bit aggresive. Good thing the swords were on sale too. (Posted on 23/07/11)

  2. Expect African Cichlids Review by John

See in the review, where it says 'Due to their aggressive behavior...'? If you house these fish with neon tetras, small barbs or a small ghost knife, you will get exactly what you paid for- a wake up call. (Posted on 23/07/11)

  3. Excellent brightly coloured fish Review by Clive
    Customer Rating

As anyone who keeps cichlids knows cichlids will eat smaller fish (neons etc) and are not really a suitable fish for a community tank, having said that, kept with other cichlids these fish are relatively peaceful and add some beautiful colour to the tank.

I have a tank of Red Jewels, Electric Yellows and Electric blues with some Kribensis and Clown Loach which is a colourful, peaceful and well balanced mix.

The jewels are easy to breed but a breeding pair really need a tank of their own to breed in and should be removed soon after the young are free swimming. (Posted on 19/07/11)

i quite enjoy them i find they are not suitable for a community tank however they are good compnaions for oscars but must have places to hide in.We were lucky enough to get a breeding pair and they r good parents, fry grow very fast under proper conditions. (Posted on 17/05/11)

  7. Killer fish not peaceful at all ! Review by Hails

I brought 4 of these fish and in 1 day lost all my neons, a small tiger barb and then found these fish eating my ghost knife alive (Posted on 21/03/11)

  8. Aggressive fish eaters Review by heidi
    Customer Rating

Be careful , i ordered neon tetras in the same order (as i have other cichlids that live peacefully with neons) and these fish ate ALL my neon tetras within 2 days and some of the plants. they are quite aggressive compared to my other fish and are not shy (Posted on 28/01/11)

  9. Gorgeous, peaceful fish Review by Alison

  10. Quality fish good colour Review by Jessica
    Customer Rating

Good healthy, peaceful yet lively fish. Only concern was that back fin had been a little damaged (probably from a bully in the same tank it was kept) but that has all but grown back now. Holds its own in my boisterous cichlid tank but doesn't like to start any fights. (Posted on 25/10/10)

  11. Excellent fish, vibrant colour. Review by Margaret

I really like the way they they dont want to hide. It's nice to have some colour in the tank without trying to find it all the time. (Posted on 25/10/10)
