The Pearl Horseface Cichlid is a hardy and character-filled South American cichlid that combines the classic sand-sifting behaviour of geophagus species with a slightly more robust and adaptable nature. This makes them a great entry point into larger South American cichlid setups.

This species displays a base colour of olive-green to bronze with a heavy overlay of iridescent blue and green pearling across the body and fins. A distinct dark mid-body spot is usually present, along with faint vertical barring. As the fish matures, the pearling becomes more intense, especially under strong lighting, giving the fish a shimmering effect. Their elongated body and constant substrate-sifting behaviour give them a very active and natural presence in the aquarium.

Sexing is possible as males mature, often developing longer fins and slightly more intense colouration. They are substrate spawners and will form pairs, with both parents guarding eggs and fry.

Tank Recommendations for your Geophagus braziliensis

A minimum aquarium size of 200 litres or larger is recommended. A fine sand substrate is essential, as they constantly sift through it for food. Driftwood and open swimming areas should be provided to replicate their natural habitat.

Suitable Tank Buddies

These fish are semi-peaceful and do best with similarly sized species.

Usually Compatible

Severums, other geophagus species, silver dollars, larger tetras, and peaceful catfish.

Sometimes Compatible

Medium-sized cichlids that may show territorial behaviour.

Rarely Compatible

Small fish that may be eaten or highly aggressive cichlids.

Feeding your Geophagus braziliensis

These fish are active feeders and constantly sift the substrate for food. The ideal diet would be a quality sinking pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms and other protein-rich foods.
