Female Neon Blue Guppy
Female guppies are often overlooked compared to their brightly coloured male counterparts, but strains like the Female Neon Blue Guppy prove that females can still be stunning in their own right. This line carries soft electric blue genetics through the body and finnage, making them ideal not only for breeding projects but also for beautifully balanced colony aquariums where the females still contribute colour and movement.
Female Neon Blue guppies typically display a silver to pale blue base body colour with soft, iridescent blue highlights developing across the flanks and caudal peduncle. While the finnage remains shorter and more streamlined than the males, subtle neon blue tones often appear through the dorsal and tail fins, especially under stronger lighting. In planted aquariums, these soft blue flashes contrast beautifully against green plants and darker backgrounds, giving the colony a polished and coordinated look.
Sexing is straightforward, with females developing a fuller body shape and shorter fins compared to males. Like all guppies, this is a livebearing species, and mature females can give birth to fully formed fry every four weeks. This makes them extremely useful for breeding lines where strong blue genetics are being selectively maintained.
Tank Recommendations for Your Female Neon Blue Guppy
A colony group can be comfortably kept in aquariums from 40 litres or larger, though larger planted aquariums are ideal for fry survival and colony growth. These fish thrive in planted setups with floating plants, mosses, and gentle upper water flow. Slightly harder water conditions help maintain health and breeding consistency.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Neon Blue guppies are peaceful and ideal for community aquariums.
Usually Compatible
Platies, mollies, rasboras, blue-eyes, and other nano community fish.
Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful gouramis or slower tetras.
Rarely Compatible
Fin-nippers such as tiger barbs or larger aggressive fish.
Feeding Your Female Neon Blue Guppy
These fish are eager surface feeders and very easy to maintain on nano foods. The ideal diet would be a quality floating nano pellet or fine flake, supplemented with baby brine shrimp, microworms, or crushed bloodworms to support breeding and strong fry development.
