Mussels have thick shells. Some are oblong-shaped, while others are rounded. They have a muscular foot that they use to burrow into the bottom of rivers. When feeding, a pair of siphons sticks out of the hind edge of the shell, sorting the rubbish from the water flowing into the shell.
Freshwater Mussels live on microscopic animals and plants. They feed and breathe by sucking water through tubes, called siphons, to filter out food particles.

Awesome :) Review by Moss
Customer Rating Love these guys! I bought 4 and dropped them in to the tank in a group, not really knowing what to expect. As soon as night fell, one had made it's way all the way across the tank and started burying itself in a cosy corner. Two more had done the same by the next day. They are fantastic to watch if you catch them on the move or with their white 'tongue' out. I think the fish think they're quite interesting too - and get quite a surprise when they get too close to the tongue causing the mussel to quickly shut it's shell tight :) (Posted on 11/05/12)

Customer Rating not much survive our tank without being eaten by other fish... however, not only do these guys thrive but unlike there tankmates they clean rather than 'dirty'. dont do much but they are so entaining to watch when they decide to move about. love em. (Posted on 8/09/11)

Fantastic, unusual tank mates Review by Jessica
Customer Rating I ordered two of these and originally thought these might not have arrived alive, but popped them in the tank anyway.
The don't move too often, but when the do- SO COOL. I love seeing their large 'tongue' pop out as they push themselves around. Well worth the wait. (Posted on 27/01/11) -
Surprising.... Review by Jessica
Customer Rating One of the coolest additions to my tank, I thought they arrived dead because they didn't do much at all, then to my surprise, just as I was watching one stuck it's 'tongue' out to move away!
They actually relocate a fair bit - as much as they can in my driftwood crowded tank. I love getting up in the morning and seeing them inexplicably in a new spot. would definitely recommend! (Posted on 25/01/11) -

Brilliant! Review by Alex
Customer Rating These things are AMAZING. Sadly we can't import them to WA so I had to source them from an actual store over here. I popped 4 in the tank not expecting much other than decoration but was surprised. The next morning they were all in different locations, with trails in the gravel showing exactly what route they took. Every morning I find all the wood and plants bowled over or even pushed a fair distance by these critters. The only thing that actually stops them is rocks. It's also fun to watch with the light off as their tongue billows out and they pick themselves off the ground like snails. It's positively intriguing. Definitely recommend them. especially if you don't mind your decor rearranged every night while you sleep. (Posted on 9/11/10)

good cleaners Review by adam
Customer Rating Not much you can really say about these guys. They dont look like much and hardly seem to move most of the time. However, you dont have to feed them a special diet. And you dont have to do anything with or for them. What you buy them for, is simply to clean your gravel. And this they do very well. A great assistant in keeping the tank clean and keeping the water clean and healthy. (Posted on 26/10/10)
