Purple spotted gudgeons are small and robust with a rounded head, a relatively small mouth and a rounded tail. They are generally dark chocolate in colour along the back, fading to pale fawn on the belly, with a number of distinguishing markings. These include black to grey patches on the sides, which are surrounded by numerous white and red spots that brighten during breeding. The fins are yellow in colour, darkening towards the extremities.
Purple spotted gudgeons generally grow to between 7 and 12 cm in length.

little snake wolf head fish Review by DeathOfTheGoat
Customer Rating i really have grown the love this fish. smart and very aware of what going on out side the tank. kinda looks and acts like a cross between a wolf fish and a snake head, but what i just cant wrap my head around is the size. WTF! a how is all that attitude packed in to such a little fish! boo! this fish should at lest reach the 12 to 24 inch range but sadly no... this is a mistake of the fish god so it cant be a 5 star fish at 6 cm. I regret buying this fish, he is a preditor to all other fish. Review by Jason
Customer Rating I regret buying this fish, he is a preditor to all other fish. It will try to eat anything that is passing by the cave. I think I'll need to remove it before it gets bigger. (Posted on 16/03/11)

nice fish Review by sean
Customer Rating Ive got 3 purple spotted gudgeons in my tank 7cm, 8-9cm and a 12-cm the smallest and the largest gudgeons have spawned like 4 times in 4 weeks and the fry are growing up fast. they are very peaceful fish the are only aggressive when breeding. they share my 6 ft tank with a sleepy cod a 3 silver perch 4 Murray river rainbow, 10 kangaroo creek rainbows and various other rainbows.
a must have in any medium fish community tank (Posted on 11/01/11) -
Pretty fish but not too tolerant of other fish. Review by Shane
Customer Rating I like mine but he ate 2 rare goby's that were not too much smaller than he is, and my Nigerian Red Krib. I am not sure what to do with this guy. I like him but also would like to have other fish in my tank. (Posted on 31/12/10)

cool fish Review by seb
Customer Rating This is an awesome looking fish, it started off really shy, but then it either killed or ate everything else in my tank, even going after a gourami that was the same size as it by eating it tail and fins, after eating all of my neon tetras and guppies. it also killed my silver shark and congo tetra. But it doesn't go near my bristlenose catfish. (Posted on 12/12/10)

love hate relationship Review by gaz
Customer Rating I have mixed feelings towards my gudgeon. he is an amazing hunter and it's great to watch him stalk the tank, and watch him feed. I made the mistake of buying some danios, a small guppy and some ghost shrimps. After initially chasing and biting the danios he leaves them alone, but he ate all the ghost shrimps and now the guppy. He is also far from the purple spotted pic and rather a brown colour. Not the prettiest fish in the world but an interesting addition to the tank. I don't want to jinx it but he gets along with my kuhli loaches, bristlenoses and even snails are fine. (Posted on 11/12/10)
