For the catfish collectors out there or aquarists looking for a new and unique breeding project, the royal whiptail catfish would be a perfect option. These fish make for a great alternative to bristlenose plecos and have the oddball flare to them as well with the unconventional body shape and came colours. They are relatively easy to breed but there is a niche and in-demand market for these fish hence their relatively high cost the reward and satisfaction of breeding or keeping these elusive fish is absolutely worth it.

My favourite fishSturisoma panamense is a challenge worth taking. As adults, these fish are amazing - their unusual markings, velvet scales, and unique way of swimming and 'walking backwards'. The three I got from Livefish were small but healthy, and absolutely no problems with delivery. The big thing to remember is to keep food up to them when young as they can't compete with fast-swimming fish. I didn't clean the glass for about 3 weeks before getting them so there is plenty of algae for them to browse on. I also put a slice of zucchini weighted down in for them. As they grow they get more assertive and enjoy algae tabs and other fishfood including frozen food - they are omnivores, not vegetarians.

UniqueThese little guys look very delicate with some unique patterns. They mind their own business and don't hassle any other fish whatsoever. Definitely a must have for the planted aquarium.

NiceGot 2 of these guys, had to special order them as they were out of stock so they were only ~ 5cm but still look awesome. Been working hard cleaning my rocks and glass since i got them. My only regret is not getting more.

Great little fishI recently bought two of these guys, great little fish to watch, they just glide over the leaves and drift wood. Great cleaners too, very happy with my fish from live fish.

Same same but Different3 stars because the picture can be misleading (otherwise 5 stars for the fish itself). I initially chose this Royal Whiptail because of the cool blueish body and defined black pigments as per the picture but the actual fish is different.
The whiptail received was light-mud-brown with darker brown pigments (instead of navy blue with black pigments like the picture). Prospective buyers should google or bing "Sturisoma panamense" and have a good look at some of the pictures to align your expectation with the Royal Whiptail.
Nevertheless, it's kind of small and likes to hide. I went and bought a large 12cm Royal Whiptail from a local aquarium (VIC) and they look identical.
The R.Whiptail is very graceful and likes to hide. when it does swim around, it very gracefully "glides" across the tank almost like a fishcraft! (fish-aircraft)
Pretty cool catfish to have around. very peaceful and hangs around the bottom of the tank (usually hiding in driftwood etc).
One cute thing about the whiptail is that it likes large leaves of a planted aquarium. It sits on a leaf and dangles on it like a swing. nice!
