Peacock Cichlid
Known as Aulonocara is a genus of haplochromine cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. All Aulonocara species are all maternal mouth brooders. Particularly in the aquarium hobby, Aulonocara species are also known as peacock cichlids, aulonocaras or simply "peacocks". This genus is strongly sexually dichromic, even by haplochromine standards.

As aquarium fish, they are best kept with other medium sized non-aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi. Decorate the aquarium with a lot of open space for the Aulonocaras to swim in and a lot of caves where fish can hide, rest or establish territories. Only keep one male unless your aquarium is large enough to support several territories.

  1. I have 4 of these guys Review by Jacqui Wilson
    Customer Rating

I have 4 of these guys, the largest Arknaten is a studd muffin - he's after all the girls in the tank regardless of what species they are! They have great colour - flashy blue heads. They love to perch themselves at the front of the tank and show off to the world - Visitors always comment on how stunning they look. The boys are not so fond of each other but are ok with other tank mates. (Posted on 16/07/10)
