This jet-black fish is a real one-of-a-kind and will add instant appeal to your fishtank.

Ghost knifes (or knives maybe?) can swim forwards, backwards, sideways, upside-down and pretty much any other angle - fascinating to watch. They can grow quite large, up to 30cm if kept in a large tank and are well looked after.

They prefer live foods like bloodworm, but can be trained to eat regular flakes. Ghost knifes like to have a place to hide, but are very active and can be spotted at almost any time of the day.

It is best not to keep too many ghost knifes together, as they will argue if they don't have their own space. However, they will cohabit happily with a wide variety of other peaceful aquarium fish.

  1. A must have for any tank Review by Angelflight

I've kept these guys for a while. They are awesome fish. They are so fascinating to watch and really easy to teach to hand feed. They are pretty shy so probably not the first option for someone who wants something really flashy. They however are very rewarding if you are patient. They swim in any direction and it can be a bit unnerving when you see them lying on their side to sleep for the first time. While placid they are a fish you should well research for a community tank. While small they are ok for community tanks but they do eat small fish when they get bigger and grow up to about 2-3 ft in length. Even in a large tank I wouldn't recommend more than one due to their territorial nature. I would suggest checking out youtube for some awesome videos of these fish. Also they seem to be to be a bit more sensitive to disease so take care to keep you tank water well maintained and free of nasties. (Posted on 9/11/11)

Unfortunately, this fish died 2 days later. All other fish are alive and well. (Posted on 26/10/10)

  4. What a strange character! These fish are really cool, they do so much weird and wonderful stuff! Review by Michelle Black

What a strange character! These fish are really cool, they do so much weird and wonderful stuff! They swim up, down, side to side, upside down, all ways round! They are great to watch, that is when they come out to play, which is night time. Sometimes all I see of them for days is the white tail bobby out of the plants! Now yes this guy is really cool and weird, but caution must be taken with him aswell! Just because their mouth looks small, DO NOT underestimate these guys! My Ghosty got really territorial of a patch of grass, but I didn't relise how bad it was.... I got a pretty little Oscar baby who was to small to go with my big Oscar just yet, so I thought ʺhe'll be nice and safe in my community tankʺ.. how wrong I was! I noticed this little Oscar liked the grass but I thought nothing of it, four days later he was floating, not eyes or fins, not good. I have dismantled its territory, but I was noticing the bigger he was getting the more often I was having ʺunexplainedʺ deaths. So he now gets bloodworm every 3rd day and has me watching him carefully! He's still really cool! (Posted on 16/07/10)
