Melanotaenia trifasciata display a great natural assortment of colours. They can be recognised by a very deep body, usually deeper than 1/3 of their body length, and an often discontinuous black mid-lateral band.
Keeping and caring for rainbowfishes in captivity is reasonably simple as far as general aquarium conditions are concerned. They are one of the easiest fishes to maintain in captivity. They also possess all the attributes we look for in aquarium fishes. Ease of breeding, hardy, beautiful colours, peaceful disposition and they won't destroy your plants or move the gravel around in your aquarium. They come in a variety of sizes to suit almost any community aquarium.
Rainbowfishes have very similar breeding habits, their food requirements are similar, and water that suits one particular species will suit all. All are of good-natured temperament and will live harmoniously, more or less, with one another.

Fantastic colour, but voracious Review by Penny
Customer Rating I have 3 of these, all pretty much grown now, they are brilliantly coloured, always lively, and eat everything in sight. I have them housed with angel fish and neon danios, and they are perfect tank mates. These fish are way under rated, as they have kept my tank totally clean, and this includes micro organisms as well, great fish to rid tanks of hydra etc. I used to have a big problem with this particular tank, and fish didnt do well, (bought diseased fish with white spot from pet shop), since having rainbow fish, this tank is crystal clear. They are in fact very beautiful when in full colour! I highly recommend them. (Posted on 5/11/11)

Colourful active fish Review by Matt
Customer Rating Recently purchased 6 Goyder's, all arrived healthy and are doing well 1 week on. Most are already starting to colour up, though the larger ones seem to be harrassing the other M. Boesemani's in my 370L tank. (Posted on 26/07/11)

big and active Review by HUXLEY
Customer Rating I purchased a Goydon River rainbow and it was only 3cm/3.5 when it arrived. has since quadrupled in size and eats everything in the tank (incl. suspected eating of tiny panda corys). He doesn't let any of the other fish swim around the upper regions of the tank and continues to thrive. Beautiful and hardy but a bit of a bully. (Posted on 26/02/11)
